Traffic Patterns

ACS task objective

To determine the applicant understands traffic patterns, can apply that knowledge, manage associated risks, demonstrate appropriate skills, and provide effective instruction.

Bottom line

Nontowered airport traffic patterns are always entered at pattern altitude. The preferred method for entering from the downwind side of the pattern is to approach the pattern on a course 45 degrees to the downwind leg and join the pattern at midfield. At nontowered airports, pilots should announce their intentions on the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) assigned to that airport.
