Purpose of and procedures for short-field takeoff and maximum performance climb.
Purpose of and procedures for short-field takeoff and maximum performance climb.
Bottom line
The short-field takeoff and climb differs from the normal takeoff and climb in the airspeeds and initial climb profile. Just after rotation and lift-off, the airplane should be allowed to accelerate to VX, climbing over obstacles at VX and transitioning to VY as obstacles are cleared. If an AFM/POH does not provide separate short-field procedures, the FAA recommends the airplane be operated only as recommended in the AFM/POH, with no operations contrary to its recommendations.
Key numbers
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| If VX is less than 5 knots higher than VMC, strongly consider reducing useful load or using another runway | VX margin |
| Raise the landing gear not later than VYSE airspeed | Gear up speed |
