One Engine Inoperative (OEI) Performance (AMEL, AMES)

ACS task objective

To determine the applicant understands elements related to multiengine performance, can apply that knowledge, manage associated risks, demonstrate appropriate skills, and provide effective instruction. Note: Evaluator assesses the applicant's knowledge of at least two knowledge elements from this Task.

Bottom line

Safe flight with one engine inoperative (OEI) requires an understanding of the basic aerodynamics involved as well as proficiency in single-engine flight. The pilot should be thoroughly familiar with the airplane’s performance capabilities and limitations in order to make an informed takeoff decision as part of the preflight planning. To be avoided above all is attempting to continue flight when it is not within the airplane’s performance capability to do so.
