United receives first GTF Advantage-powered Airbus A321XLR
The delivery brings the newer engine standard to United’s long-range narrowbody fleet, with durability and thrust improvements claimed by the manufacturer.
Pratt & Whitney and United Airlines marked delivery of United’s first Airbus A321XLR powered by GTF Advantage engines on September 24, 2026.
The engine manufacturer says the Advantage standard offers greater durability and additional takeoff thrust compared with the current GTF model. Its stated 4–8 percent improvement refers to takeoff thrust, not fuel savings. Pratt & Whitney also says the engines are interchangeable with the current model, supporting airlines operating a combined fleet.
The company plans to move its PW1100G-JM production line to the Advantage specification by 2028. Performance and durability figures in the announcement are manufacturer claims, rather than results from a newly reported United operational study.
