Technology recap: NASA and GE demonstrate hybrid-electric propulsion at Farnborough
The demonstration provides flight-test experience for future hybrid propulsion; commercial performance and deployment remain separate questions.
Technology recap — July 20, 2026. NASA reported that a modified Saab 340B demonstrated a megawatt-class hybrid-electric propulsion system at the Farnborough International Airshow. The system was developed with GE Aerospace and combines electric motors, a gas turbine and energy storage.
NASA described the appearance as the system’s public debut after earlier flight testing. The research is intended to inform propulsion for future regional-size aircraft and draws on years of ground and flight development.
This was a technology demonstration, not an announcement of commercial airline service. NASA’s report did not establish a measured 30 percent fuel saving for the Farnborough flight.
