FAA SAFO 26001 Warns Pilots on Space-Launch Debris Hazards
Launch-related airspace closures are becoming a routine flight-planning variable across the southeastern U.S., Gulf, and Caribbean. Build NOTAM and OIS checks into preflight.
The FAA issued Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) 26001 warning air carriers, GA operators, and crews to account for the growing impact of commercial and government space-launch activity on the national airspace system. Launch anomalies can produce debris fields requiring immediate activation of Debris Response Areas (DRAs), rerouting, and ground stops. The SAFO advises reviewing NOTAMs for Space Launch Potential Danger Areas, ensuring holding fuel per 14 CFR 121.647, identifying alternates, and consulting the FAA OIS for real-time updates. It notes DRAs are not issued in non-radar or oceanic airspace.
