“"May 14, 2013"”
The milestones came in rapid succession. On May 14, 2013, the X-47B launched from the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) — the first time a UAV was catapulted from an aircraft carrier. On July 10, 2013, it returned to catch the arresting wire aboard the same ship, executing the first arrested landing of an unmanned aircraft on a carrier at sea. On August 17, 2014, it operated alongside an F/A-18 Hornet aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, launching, recovering, and clearing the deck for the manned fighter — the first demonstration of manned-unmanned cooperative operations from a carrier deck. The program culminated on April 22, 2015, when the X-47B conducted the world's first fully autonomous aerial refueling with an Omega Air KC-707 tanker, receiving more than 4,000 pounds of fuel over the coast of Maryland.
The engineering principles pioneered here—The milestones came in rapid succession—are still embedded in the aircraft you fly today.
