Set the engine controls, identify and verify the inoperative engine, and feather the appropriate propeller.
Bottom line
Most direct the pilot to assume VYSE, set takeoff power, retract the flaps and landing gear, identify, verify, and feather the failed engine. The “verify” step directs the pilot to retard the throttle of the engine thought to have failed. To feather the propeller, the propeller control is brought fully aft.
