Effects of bank angle and groundspeed on rate and radius of turn.
Effects of bank angle and groundspeed on rate and radius of turn.
Bottom line
If it is not banked, there is no force available to cause it to deviate from a straight flight path. An increase in speed causes a decrease in the ROT when using the same bank angle. An aircraft traveling at 120 knots is able to turn a 360° circle in a tighter radius than an aircraft traveling at 240 knots.
Key numbers
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| 2.62 degrees per second at 240 knots with a 30° bank | Rate of turn |
| 49° angle of bank for 5.25° per second at 240 knots | Bank for rate |
| 2,100 feet radius at 65 knots glide speed, 3° per second | Standard rate radius |
