Wind correction techniques on approach and landing.
Wind correction techniques on approach and landing.
Bottom line
The two primary crosswind methods, crab and wing-low, are typically used together: crab on final, then transition to a sideslip before touchdown. Before touchdown, lower the upwind wing and apply opposite rudder to prevent a turn, aligning the longitudinal axis with the runway centerline to avoid landing gear side loads.
Key numbers
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| about 21 percent more landing distance from a ten-knot tailwind | Tailwind penalty |
| 30 seconds, for example, per some AFM/POH slip limitations | Slip limit |
