Use of systems or equipment, including automation and portable electronic devices.
Bottom line
Electronic instrument displays, GPS, and autopilot tend to capture the pilot's attention and hold it for long periods of time. Automation can allow a pilot to become complacent, unprepared, or lose situational awareness, and if an unexpected change in flight plan is then needed, workload and confusion may suddenly increase. A portable electronic device may be used if the operator of the aircraft has determined it will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used.
