Privileges and limitations
Privileges and limitations.
Bottom line
A private pilot generally cannot act as pilot in command for compensation or hire. Expense sharing is a limited exception: the pilot must pay at least a pro rata share, and shared costs are limited to fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees. A legitimate shared-expense flight also requires a common purpose with the passengers and must not involve holding out transportation services to the public.
