Aircraft configuration for landing.

ACS element text (the applicant demonstrates understanding of)

Aircraft configuration for landing.

Bottom line

A full-flap landing speed may not leave the airplane enough energy to complete a go-around and avoid obstacles on the climb out. Retracting flaps to correct for an undershoot on final creates an unnecessary risk: it may cause a sudden decrease in lift, an excessive sink rate, and an aggravated unstable condition. For a typical piston aircraft, one of the criteria of a stabilized approach is that the aircraft is in the correct landing configuration with flaps as required, landing gear extended, and in trim.
