Use the magnetic direction indicator in navigation, including turns to headings.
Use the magnetic direction indicator in navigation, including turns to headings.
Bottom line
The magnetic compass is subject to a number of errors that must be considered. Turning error shows up only on turns to or from northerly headings in the Northern Hemisphere and southerly headings in the Southern Hemisphere. Because of the lead of the compass card, a northerly turn should be stopped prior to arrival at the desired heading.
