Select a suitable landing area considering altitude, wind, terrain, obstructions, and available glide distance.
Bottom line
The many variables, such as altitude, obstruction, wind direction, landing direction, landing surface and gradient, and landing distance requirements of the airplane, determine the pattern and approach procedures to use. After selecting a landing area, perform a reconnaissance and look for obstructions, field condition, wind direction, and snow conditions if possible.
