Bottom line
To avoid missing important steps, always use the appropriate checklists when available. At night, prior to starting the engine, the pilot should carefully and methodically scan the area around the aircraft to clear the propeller area. Turning the rotating beacon ON or flashing the airplane position lights helps alert persons nearby to remain clear of the propeller.
