Bottom line
It is strongly recommended that a VFR flight plan be filed with a Flight Service Station or equivalent flight plan filing service. Dead reckoning is navigation solely by means of computations based on time, airspeed, distance, and direction. Unless otherwise authorized by ATC, a VFR flight plan must include the aircraft identification number and, if necessary, its radio call sign.
