Purpose of and procedures for demonstration of flight characteristics at various configurations and airspeeds.
Bottom line
The pilot should know the engine power settings, natural horizon pitch attitudes, and flight instrument indications that produce the various types of descents. Slow flight may be conducted in straight-and-level flight, turns, climbs, or descents, and in the clean configuration, landing configuration, or at any other combination of landing gear and flaps.
Key numbers
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| 500 fpm target for a partial power descent | Descent rate |
| Normally no greater than 1.3 VSO for a minimum safe airspeed descent | Min safe speed |
| 10 percent of descent rate (100 feet for 1,000 fpm) to begin leveling off | Level-off lead |
| No lower than 3,000 feet AGL for multiengine slow flight | ME slow flight |
